Family Reversals

Family Dinner Series: Family Reversals

A father’s role has been changing slowly within American society for the past fifty years, specifically their closer involvement within the family structure, which has given rise to some very positive results. With these changing times, we at Homemade Gourmet look at how a role reversal in the kitchen can have positive effects, or simply interesting changes that are noteworthy.

Perhaps Mom has moved up in her career and now has longer hours, this means Dad takes lead more at home. Having Dad around can be fun, and the kids seeing their father take charge in the kitchen with hopes of a more playful atmosphere can allow dinner time to feel relaxed. This might have more to do with the basic shift in who has to cook or perhaps what Dad is living up to (i.e. Mom’s cooking), so he decides not to put any added pressure on everyone. The husband can end up bringing a different flair, or simply an assortment of recipes that perhaps haven’t been cycled through family time before. Keeping things fresh and new at the table should never be frowned upon.

Here’s one example a Homemade Gourmet staff member recently came up with when it was their week to cook (at his particular home, he and his wife alternate weeks).

He then decided to add an interesting side dish to the mix that truly brought an interesting touch.

Cranberry Almond Pasta Salad Mix

  1. In a large saucepot, bring 4-quarts of water to a boil.  Remove seasoning packet from mix and set aside.  Add contents of pasta bag and return to a boil.  Cook 8-9 minutes or until pasta is al dente.  Rinse with cold water and drain well.
  2. In large bowl, combine mayonnaise and vinegar with seasoning packet.  Add cooked pasta, turkey and almonds.  Stir until well blended.
  3. Cover and chill at least 2 hours before serving.

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 1 Homemade Gourmet® Cranberry Almond Pasta Salad Mix with seasoning packet
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • ½ pound cooked, smoked or roasted turkey, diced
  • ½ cup sliced almonds

Cuisine is important, and this is where men can also bring in their traditional barbecue or grilling techniques to the dinner table, someplace outside a backyard BBQ. Basically, there is just more fun to be had, men are enjoying the process of experimentation & combining ideas/tastes together, but also the fulfillment of feeding loved ones.

If the husband is in charge and preparing food in the kitchen, & perhaps the wife is the one just getting home for a change, it can provide an opportunity for bonding between spouses. Catching up on more serious issues, venting about the day’s work, or even the new career, etc. while the kids are off playing. There can never too much communication at home, and with Dad focusing on the cooking, it can provide that extra ear to simply listen, instead of interjecting and opinionating.

Some other interesting findings have revealed that fathers who are more egalitarian, walk the talk with household activities normally associated as “female” roles, usually have daughters that will go on to show better work placement and careers outside the home. With sons it can provide them with an alternate point of view on what roles they can have within the household. That it isn’t strictly of mowing lawns and fixing leaky sinks. So giving the kids small tasks like slicing vegetables, peeling husks, picking fresh herbs from the garden out back to help out with Dad’s cooking, can bridge the family divide and get everyone involved. When Mom arrives home she’ll be surprised to a fantastic meal that everyone had a part in.

Lastly, we at Homemade Gourmet know how intimidated first time cooks can feel, especially you dads that may be overwhelmed by the kitchen itself. This is why we’ve made it our mission to simplify the cooking process, helping assist you, so that delicious balanced meals don’t have to be for the experts, or those with a lot of free time on their hands.
